Sounding № 01 — John

First drop

A sounding is how sailors measure depth. Every month one book drops — complete, verse by verse, nothing skipped and nothing rushed. You finish it before the next one lands.

John first: the Gospel that opens on the edge of eternity and spends the rest of its length on people who are tired, sceptical, or out of options. Every passage is built the same way.

  • 01Plain ExplanationWhat the passage actually says, without the churchy vocabulary.
  • 02Deeper InsightThe Hebrew or Greek — but only where it genuinely changes what you understand.
  • 03For Your LifeTwo questions an actual teenager can actually answer.
  • 04Dig DeeperThe hard part. The contradiction, the violence, the thing nobody addresses.

John 1 : 5 · Deeper Insight

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

The Greek is katelaben — and it means two things at once: overpower and grasp. John almost certainly meant both. The darkness could not put the light out. The darkness also never understood it.

The Translators' Circle

The app is free. It always will be.

Not free-with-an-asterisk. Not free until we build an audience. Scripture and the full commentary are free, in every language we can reach, permanently — because a kid with a ninety-dollar phone should get exactly what everyone else gets.

Translating theology well is the expensive part — a trained theological translator per language, then an in-country reviewer, then a teen who tells us which sentences made them roll their eyes. The clothing pays for that. Every capsule funds a language.
